FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is dragon boating?

Dragon boating originated over 2500 years ago in the Southern Provinces of China and is a traditional paddled watercraft activity with roots in folk rituals.  A standard dragon boat is 12 meters long and approximately 1.1 meters wide.  A standard boat holds 20 paddlers (10 rows of 2 paddlers sitting abreast), a steersperson in back to navigate the boat, and a drummer in front to pound a rhythm to keep paddlers in synch.  Dragon boating encompasses elements of power, synchronization, and endurance.

When is dragon boat season?

The Flying Ears typically begin practice in Spring (late April/early May, weather depending) and go through mid-October.  In other areas, dragon boating is a year round sport - but sadly, the weather in Illinois is not conducive for that.

Where are team practices held?

On the water practices are held at beautiful Lake Shabbona on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings.  Land practices are held year long at varying locations around DeKalb county.

What if I have never done a paddle sport before?

No problem! Dragon boating is suitable for all levels of fitness and experience.  It is an amazing low impact, full body workout that is a ton of fun.  We invite guests to join us at a practice to try it out.  We will provide all the equipment required (paddle and personal flotation device) and instruction.  Guests can participate in TWO free practices to see if dragon boating is right for them.  After that, there is an additional fee to participate in practices or you can choose to pay the annual member fee.

What does membership include?

The annual membership fees cover the costs of insurance on the boats and equipment.  We typically offer two practices a week (practices will not be held on days we are participating in a race event) with our dedicated coaching staff.  Members can use the team equipment provided (which stays at the practice site) or may choose to purchase their own personal equipment.  We also participate in a variety of competitive dragon boat races each year (at an additional cost to participants) and community events around our area.  Should you choose to participate in a race or community event, we encourage you to purchase official team gear to wear.

What do I need to bring to practice?

-You will want to wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you do not mind getting wet.

-A water bottle to stay hydrated.

-A hat or sunglasses to shield your eyes.

-An enthusiastic spirit and the willingness to learn.
